THE WORTHY PROJECT - WHY WOMEN OVER 40 ARE WORTHY OF LUXURIOUS PHOTO EXPERIENCES
Why Women Over 40 Are Worthy of a Luxurious Portrait Experience
When I was deep in the middle of the Worthy Series — photographing women, watching them transform in front of my lens, hearing them catch their breath when they saw their images for the first time — I kept getting asked the same question: "Why women over 40?"
The first answer was simple. I am a woman over 40. And I wanted to be an example of someone who believed she was worthy of being truly seen — not just in a quick phone snapshot, not just in the background of someone else's photo, but in a portrait made specifically for her.
That felt personal. But the more I sat with the question, the more I realized it was bigger than me.
The Woman Behind the Camera
Most women I know are the ones taking the pictures. We love our families. We love our friends. We want to document every milestone, every ordinary Tuesday, every moment worth remembering — for everyone else. But we remove ourselves from the frame. We are more comfortable behind the camera because somewhere along the way, we absorbed a quiet but damaging message: wanting your picture taken makes you conceited. Selfish. Self-centered.
So instead, we hide.
We hide behind the camera because we have convinced ourselves that portraits are for younger women. That beauty belongs to youth. That we have somehow aged out of the right to be documented with care and intention.
That belief is exactly what the Worthy Series was created to challenge.
What I Saw in Every Single Session
I photographed women of every shape, size, background, and life experience through the Worthy Series. And what I witnessed, session after session, was nothing short of remarkable.
Women who arrived nervous, apologetic, unsure — women who had spent years convinced that the camera was not for them — would look at their images and go completely still. Not because they looked like someone else. But because they finally saw themselves the way the people who love them have always seen them.
They liked what they saw. Not in spite of their age, their size, their wrinkles, their perceived imperfections — but because of everything those things represented. The life they had lived. The hard things they had survived. The wisdom they had earned.
One of the things I heard again and again was this: "I didn't realize I looked like that." And what they meant was — I didn't realize I looked strong. Confident. Beautiful. Real.
Why 40 — and Beyond — Is the Best Time
We have a cultural blind spot when it comes to women over 40. Grey hair on a man reads as distinguished. On a woman, it still too often reads as something to fix. Men are described as aging gracefully while women are told to fight it.
But the women I have photographed through the Worthy Series are not fighting anything. They are showing up — fully, unapologetically, and with a kind of grounded confidence that simply is not available at 25. That confidence comes from experience. From knowing who you are and what you value. From having survived loss, raised children, built careers, navigated relationships, and come out the other side with a clearer sense of self than you ever had when you were younger.
That is not something to minimize. That is something to celebrate — and to document.
What the Worthy Series Actually Is
The Worthy Series is an ongoing portrait experience offered through Beauclair Photography in Kirkland, Washington, serving women across the greater Seattle area including Bellevue, Redmond, Sammamish, Woodinville, and the broader Eastside.
Each session is designed from the ground up to feel like an experience — not just a photo shoot. Here is what every Worthy Series session includes:
A personal pre-session consultation with Shannon to talk through your story, your style, and how you want to feel when you see your images
Professional hair and makeup by Beauclair Studio — not to make you look like someone else, but to bring out the most polished, confident version of you
A fully directed portrait session with Shannon's editorial approach — you will never be left wondering what to do with your hands
A curated image reveal appointment where you see your finished images for the first time together
Portrait products delivered as digital files, fine art prints, or framed wall art
The experience is unhurried, private, and completely centered on you. Many participants describe it as one of the most meaningful things they have ever done for themselves — not because of the photographs, but because of how the process made them feel.
You Are Not Too Old. You Are Not Too Anything.
I want to say this as plainly as I can: there is no version of you that is not worthy of this experience. You do not need to lose weight first. You do not need to wait until you feel more confident. You do not need to look a certain way, be a certain age, or have a certain kind of story.
The women who have gone through the Worthy Series range from women in their early 40s stepping into a new chapter, to women in their 60s and 70s who spent decades putting everyone else first and finally decided it was their turn. Every single one of them left their session with something they did not walk in with: proof, in their hands, that they were worth seeing.
If you are a woman over 40 in the Seattle, Kirkland, Bellevue, or Eastside area — and some part of you has been waiting for permission to do something like this — consider this it.
You are worthy. You always have been. Let us make something beautiful together.
