Celebrating All Types of Motherhood

Redefining Motherhood: Celebrating Every Kind of Caregiver and Mother

Motherhood is so much more than biology. It's not defined by giving birth or raising a child in the traditional sense — it's about the act of nurturing, protecting, and showing unconditional love. While Mother's Day often conjures images of traditional moms, the truth is that motherhood comes in many forms. From single dads to pet parents, to caregivers and those who've stepped in to offer love and guidance — motherhood is about showing up, offering comfort, and being a steady source of support for someone else.

A Personal Note from Shannon

My mother died when she was 30. I was raised by my father — a 31-year-old man left with four young daughters, no extended family to lean on, and no roadmap for what came next. His parents had passed, my mother was an only child, and he did it entirely on his own. He showed up every single day with patience, love, and quiet sacrifice. He was, in every way that mattered, our mother too. That experience shaped how I see Mother's Day. It taught me early on that the holiday should include every person who acts as a mother — everyone who nurtures, protects, and loves unconditionally, regardless of title or biology.

Motherhood Beyond the Traditional Definition

Single dads who play the role of both parents. Pet parents who provide unwavering love and care to their furry companions. Grandmothers who stepped in to raise grandchildren. Stepmothers who chose to love children that weren't biologically theirs. Caregivers who devote themselves to nurturing someone through life's hardest seasons. Aunts, mentors, chosen family — people who simply showed up and stayed. All of these experiences embody the heart of what we call motherhood. The patience, the sleepless nights, the quiet sacrifices, and the joyful moments of connection — they define what it means to love like a mother. And every single one of them deserves to be seen.
