Beauty vs Boudoir Photography - What’s the Difference?
People reach out to book their portrait session with a word already picked out. They think “beauty” means tight crop, good light, and a face retouched until it's perfect. They think “boudoir” means something else entirely - low light, lace, a session you talk about in a whisper.
Maybe that division was real at some point; but it’s not now. Not at Beauclair Photography, at least.
Same Studio, Same Light, A Different Fabric
Sometimes the only apparent difference in an image is how far back the camera stands, how much of the room you can see, or a slight wardrobe variation.
Take a black wool peacoat. Button it up, light it clean, crop in tight on the face. That's a beauty portrait. Swap the peacoat for a black satin robe, pull the shot back a little, and now people call it boudoir. Same woman, same light, same studio, one piece of fabric. Now the word changes.
Or try this: same pose, same outfit, everything the same. She smiles — beauty. She doesn't — ooooh! Now it’s "boudoir." That's not a real distinction. That's something that we’ve unknowingly picked up somewhere and internalized.
Words Matter
It’s easy to sense a hint of discomfort from some people when they say “boudoir” out loud. The word is somehow still carrying old baggage for them. And we understand the power of language.
In my studio, we rarely use the words boudoir or beauty when we discuss portraiture. Women’s Photography is our area of expertise. Any further classification beyond that is up to you. No matter which modifiers you’d like to use, our sessions are designed to have you walking out feeling like the best version of yourself - however you want to show up that day.
The range of your portraits is never limited by a label.
Guess Which Photo Is Which
Look through the photos in this post. They came from sessions booked as “branding,” as “boudoir,” as “beauty”, and even as “family”. If you can guess which is which, you're better at this than I am.
That's the real answer to "what's the difference." Not much. What matters is the woman in the photo, and whether she recognizes herself in it.
